Unable to ping ip address windows 7

I've run through the typical troubleshooting steps, and even the W7 wizards are not correcting the issue. To be clear, everything else, including internet access is flawless - it's just this single IP a printer and the W7 systems. This really sounds like a Windows 7 firewall issue. I would turn off the Win7 firewall and see if the problem persists. My guess is you'll be able to connect fine without the firewall.

If you absolutely need the Win7 firewall on, you will then need to create a firewall rule to allow connection to the printer. Thanks for the reply. The firewall is disabled.. This printer was connected until we changed the IP scheme yesterday - they added a second WAN circuit at their home so we split the network and reassigned the IP on the printer. Again, it is currently seen by a Vista machine so you're probably on the right track, but I'm thinking it could have to do with one of the other network sharing or discovery services..?

ICMP is blocked by default in Windows 7 firewall. I know you said your firewall was off but check out this article and see if it helps. Network should list as Home or Work, sometimes Win 7 can set a network as Public, which will also lock all the settings down to off. Is this a peer to peer network? Can you plug the computer directly into the printer and print? Mark, this particular network is P2P; just a simple home network. There is a Vista system that currently connects and prints without problems on the network so I know the issue is not with the printer.

I know that it would seem that there's a firewall rule blocking this or that a Homegroup setting is causing issues. The workgroup names are the same, and I am a user and administrator on both machines with the same password.

I have tried with the Windows firewall down on both machines and the antivirus software down on both. Both machines show just fine on the router. Three days have passed, and I cannot crack this problem. Last year I used Windows XP, and it navigated by name perfectly.

Is it Windows 7 Professional doing something differently? I've noticed name resolution is a hit or miss function on a peer-to-peer network with no central DNS server on any version of Windows.

You may check to see if the zeroconf networking service is running which is supposed to resolve names and a host of other things. I usually install the Bonjour service from Apple which works flawlessly for local name resolution on small networks.

Since they can ping each other it's safe to assume the latter is so. Why can't I ping a PC on my home network? As mentioned in the linked post "sometimes called Domain Name". If not, check the box to enable it and ping your remote host. Sign up to join this community.

Sorry this didn't help. Thanks for your feedback. My Setup is as following:. Network discovery is on in Windows 7 and relevant services are set to automatic on both machines. This thread is locked.
