I've just got back from Dominica shooting a lot of wide angle and have come across a serious problem with the pair of YS Autos i usually use for macro. When shooting WA i found the strobes were quenching way too much when trying to light a subject with a light background ie sponge with blue water, using Auto 1 or 2 mode or winding them up to full made no difference.

The only way around this was taking much less blue water or swithing back to my subtronic, not really what i was looking for. I'm not sure I understand - you had the strobes set on full power and they were still "quenching early.

What ever power setting used the strobes would fire but would leave the subject almost totally unlit, i had this problem with the I then tried some tests on the boat and found the same problem it seems as though the auto sensor will not give me manual control and thinks there is already enough light.

That's interesting. I had exactly the same problem on a YS90 in the Red Sea last summer. The strobe had done several trips without showing any signs of malfunction and suddenly started to quench.
